What I Think I Know

by Damien Del Russo

Boyakasha! Yes, it is done. We now own our new house. In fact, I didn't waste any time in deconstructing the kitchen - I already disassembled the refrigerator, and moved that along with the oven into another room. One very nice surprise - the cabinets are in much better condition than I recalled, so we will essentially work around them in renovating the kitchen. Some will be relocated, but we're trying to keep as many as possible. I also went to Home Depot to order the new microwave, dishwasher, and refrigerator - 0% interest until 2005! I'll keep the updates short and sweet as they occur.

The NYT has a good look at good looking Ethnically Ambiguous models and socialites.

Have you noticed the recent increase in Japanese cool? The have a lot of examples, and they didn't even mention pr0n!

And interesting set of "Top 10" words of the year.

And for those in the Washington area, a look at "HOT" lanes - "High Occupancy Toll" traffic lanes. I like the idea of the free market at work, but I can see why some people would view them as unfair to the poor ('Lexus Lanes'). What I can't understand is how people like Glendening can cancel even study of the idea - similarly to school vouchers, opponents seem to fear success. For the HOT lanes, I'll be interested to see if they work (or get a chance to try).

Wow, end of the year. Time for my annual goals and resolutions. I don't make many resolutions because I tend to live a fairly efficient and disciplined life, and don't beat myself up about much. So, I tend to focus on goals.

But first, a quick look at the last year. I accomplished much, mostly with the help of my wonderful wife. Without belaboring the point: Birth of Artemis, purchase of new home, construction of shed, launch and maintenance of this website, elimination of nearly all consumer debt, purchase of great new car, 30th birthday, and second place in one of my Fantasy Football leagues. Not bad. What shall I do for an encore?

In the New Year, I Shall:

  • Ensure the safe and proper growth of Artemis
  • Steer my net worth into six figure territory
  • Exercise an average of 15 minutes per day (that's a resolution!)
  • Maintain and improve this website
  • Renovate our new kitchen
  • Build a new and better shed
  • Build a big-ass deck
  • Build a big-ass fence (over 200 feet long!)
  • Otherwise landscape a big-ass yard
  • Throw at least one big-ass party
  • Avoid obtaining a big ass
  • Keep tabs on my current friends and make a couple new ones

Anything less and I'm a complete freaking failure!

Wait, hold on. I have a baby whispering to me. Ahh, yes. Artemis would like me to post her New Year's Goals too (she doesn't have anything to resolve, or be resolute about). She says:

Daddy, in the next year I shall [she's quite proper]:

  • Learn to crawl
  • Learn to walk
  • Learn to say some things like 'Daddy" and "Osama Bin Laden has farty pants"
  • Pull out Toby's hair and eat it
  • Figure out what those little slits in the wall are, the ones with the plugs in them
  • Learn to run away from Mommy
  • Laugh a million laughs and smile a million smiles. [ED: Likely by February]

Well there you have it. Have a great new year, and see you on the other side!
