What I Think I Know

by Damien Del Russo

Quick links: New "music video" of Artemis.

Since I probably won't post for Friday, here's enough interesting, humorous, and mind-numbingly ridiculous stuff to get you through to the weekend:

Yawn much? Maybe it means you're empathetic. Note that the theory that yawning has to do with a lack of oxygen has been disproven.

Check out these automatic lawnmowers. I use a corded electric, and that works fine for me, but these look pretty cool.

Christopher Hitchens has no mercy - and I completely agree with him about Bob Hope.

Wired has the goods on an information market, although I have my doubts. Who's going to take a bet whether Bush will choke on a pretzel, anyhoo?

Oh, in case you didn't know: Jeff Goldblum is watching you poop.

The grammarians in the audience will like this list of "groaners".

Britney broke Fred Durst's heart? Slow gossip day?

MacMinute links to the best iPod article. Ever. Good for non-nerds, too. For the nerds, check this out: you an pull songs from your iPod back onto your computer!

Take this quiz, it's really funny. This political quiz is also quite good.

Year-round school?

If the school is a great one, then perhaps. But equating school with learning is a big assumption, or presumption, to make. Long summers allow the exploration of youth that can't be done in a 2 week break, or even a 1 month break. I know we're not agrarians anymore, but there's a lot of learning that can be done over those long breaks. When I was in school, I took a 6 week trip to Hawaii and a 2 month trip to western Canada - both major life experiences that were probably more informative than school could have been. We also had team activities like daily running exercises, week after week through the long summer - great exercise and great for learning - not your typical after school activity, and too much to cram into a 3 or 4 week summer vacation.

And, of course, the opportunity to make lots of cash is greatly reduced when your breaks are spread over the year. I spent several summers working practically full time, and made money to do exciting things like the trips I mentioned. Business owners don't need anyone for 3 weeks - but a 2+ month summer worker makes a lot of sense, especially for seasonal industries.

Oh well. For kids who just watch TV and leak learning like a rusted bucket, it might be an improvement. For the explorers of the world, it's a lot closer to stifling. For my daughter, I think home-schooling one or two semesters would make more sense than this year-round business.

Caveat - most of the benefits I mentioned are for high school students. For grammar school, it might make more sense - I personally don't recall much from my grammar school summers.
