Annie Lennox - A Thousand Beautiful Things

What I Think I Know

by Damien Del Russo

Baby update: we're scheduled for Wednesday July 9th. It will be announced here! I'll also send emails and call some folks, but as things will be hectic, the this is probably the best place to keep up with developments.

I watched Sex and the City the other night, and was quite satisfied: they featured TiVo, including both the joys and the sorrow, they lampooned a health food fad, and they were funny throughout. I was expecting the new season to be more of the same, and although to some extent it is, it is still fresh and funny.

John Bloom has a good analysis of the last week's "diversity" ruling from the Supreme Court.

Cringeworthy quote: "I'm not sure where Arnold [Schwarzenegger] gets his political instincts. People often say that for Kennedys, it's in the water."--Sen. Ted Kennedy, quoted by the Associated Press, June 27

Nicholas Kristof presents a sound argument for loosening rent control in NYC. Unfortunately, arguing that a system that benefits residents to the detriment of those who don't (yet) live in the city is unlikely to garner much support within the 5 buroughs. If they did correct the rents up there, I might even consider living there for a while.

Jacob Sullum does a great slow drive-by on the "food police". Save this one for when you have some extra time!

Mark Steyn does his usual masterful job, this time casting an eye towards the Supreme Court.

Finally, the Reverse Cowgirl Blog is running a "guest blogging" week. It's great! The link is for a particular entry, but the entire blog is hilarious.

The current song is from the new Annie Lennox CD, so now is a good time to mention it. She's getting plenty of attention, so it's probably not necessary to go too in depth - she's #1 on the Apple Music Store and Amazon.com, so album sales are obviously pretty good. There's already some Grammy talk, which, in light of Steely Dan's success a couple years ago, is well-founded.

I think it's fair to say that the success of Bare is not a result of a media storm, but indicative of the quality. I bought it the day it was released, and I've been listening every day since - Annie has really done a superb job here. Certainly as good as Diva, and it will probably spawn as many hits (Why, Walking on Broken Glass). Much like Tori Amos' Scarlet's Walk, Bare contains many magical, beautiful moments.

Be sure the check out the new page, What I Read.
